Comtent Club 2017 Roundup: Black Friday And Beyond in London

Last year throwback of Comtent Club, the holiday season is the most important ecommerce businesses time. Years back it meant Christmas tree with gifts and family time, but for merchants and publisher the arrival of the holiday season and Black Friday is apprehension. It’s an ecommerce beast, which can be troublesome when not prepared. That’s why Skimlinks thought it’d be perfect subject matter for a Comtent Club.

For the first time the panel included merchants, as well as publishers. Both sides show different priorities, so the thought of bringing together has helped clarify perspectives and  proved to be more insightful.

There were two speakers from each side, making a total panel of four, chaired by Skimlinks CEO Alicia Navarro. For the publishers they were Jon Hicks from Gamer Network and Henry Burrell from IDG UK and for the merchants we had Chris Worthy from eBay and Filip Janczak from Bluebella speak and our Creatos Media founder.

The key takeaways were:

It really is getting earlier every year – looking at this year that is still valid point.

“Christmas creep” is real. For Gamer Network Jon said people start thinking about Black Friday in July and August and Filip said Black Friday kicks things off in November and keeps them high through till the January sales.

Chris from eBay had an interesting perspective, which we see in our network, that the holiday season is lasting later. As logistics have improved, people have been able to put off their shopping deeper into December, waiting until around December 15th for the last guaranteed shipping date for Christmas.

How does Black Friday affect the holiday season?

There’s been a lot of talk about whether Black Friday is a good or a bad thing, in the sense that winning on Black Friday can mean losing overall by taking focus away from the holiday season and losing it all. The panel didn’t feel winning on Black Friday has to mean losing out overall.

Filip said January sales can actually be better than Christmas because people take advantage of offers. Henry pointed out that for tech products, deals aren’t necessarily that great on Black Friday and people are savvy enough to see through it, so despite seeing a spike on Black Friday that doesn’t mean that you fall off a cliff in the earlier part of the year. Chris said eBay now see it as a catalyst that drives velocity up for the whole period and drew attention to the fact eBay now views it as an extended sales period rather than a single specific peak.

Winning on Black Friday means stepping things up and making more of an effort

Henry said that at IDG they don’t change their content creation process, instead they just have to up their game, because it’s a more challenging time of year than normal. Sharing metaphrases with merchants for particular products, especially when creating content that features deals, makes competition especially fierce.

Filip felt for merchants they have to be reactive. They’ll have offers ahead of time that they send to publishers under embargo, but sometimes they’ll be leaked and that means being reactive. If particular products begin performing well merchants also need to respond to that too.

What happened in 2016 and what do they think will happen in 2017?

Predictably the panel were slightly wary of trying to predict too much about the year ahead.

Jon suggested things are just becoming more competitive. Traditionally niche publications have been able to benefit much more from their editorial expertise, leveraging that to provide excellent service to readers and customers, but Jon suggested 2016 was the first year broadsheet newspapers became engaged. So Gamer Network will be focused on ranking well for on search engines to get all the attention.

Henry agreed that competition was and will be intense. IDG’s guiding principle will be recommending products the team believe in, because they recognise that while there might be short term incentives to recommending some products, if they don’t believe them and readers get a poor experience then they’ll see through recommendations and stop paying attention.

Chris suggested he’ll be happy so long as it’s bigger and better. Consoles were huge in 2016, but eBay’s intention is to broaden out the verticals that have deals in 2017, although tech will always be the first one people focus on.

Filip pointed to the increasingly prominent role of social media and suggested merchants will be looking to amplify their reach across all channels to compete on Black Friday

1. First point shows how we can increase our leads compared to people that do not blog at all. That is important point if we want to keep our brand or product floating at top. In my opinion anything that helps our brand and works positively on our image should be taken to consideration as another tool which will increase our customer and business reach.  

2. Second point is pretty simple, if we blog frequently we get to view online more often and our website and social media platforms that are linked to our blog will do as well. 

3. Third point might seem a bit frighting as social interaction between each other is what makes us humans, however the increase of online platforms to communicate has been rising for some time now. Business do not always have time to talk with most of their customers, that is why we use emails, social media and other types of messengers. 

4. The fourth point is right that blogging is only what takes is time. However some people and business do not have time for it. That is why there are services which can create your blog and social media like Creatos Media.

Judgement / Ariel Narunsky

"Judgement is the brainchild of Ariel Z. Narunsky, and is a unique artwork, which mixes together several disciplines in order to create a truly beneficial and effective project. By grafting together the skills and ideas from science, sociology, psychology, animal studies, philosophy, physics, architecture and art we were able to design this colossal and superimposing construction and surroundings." 

Creatos Media has attended event on 7th July 2015.

"Judgement is an attempt to utilize the perception of stadiums as social monuments to create a mirror or monument to our contemporary society and the human condition.

The project establishes concepts and views regarding motive, meaning, satisfaction, control, punishment and utopia, while all along grafting it with an internal monologue aimed towards the art world. The work offers a proposal for the UK’s largest artwork, public or otherwise, that will be erected out of the existing infrastructure of the London 2012 Olympic stadium at the Queen Elizabeth Park.

In the exhibition of Judgement the work of judgement is unveiled; the new work will offer a giant spiralled three-lane running track enveloped by a spiral wall. At its centre the track will continue underground through a tunnel, which eventually ejects you back on to the streets of London and back to your life. The construction, once erect, aims to be open around the clock for all to come and take part freely as a spectator or runner alike. Offering itself as a daily activity in the life of a community.

The exhibition draws on the aesthetics and ideas of information centres and visitors’ centres and will be using these elements to form the basis of the installation. The installation will fill the gallery space with 3D printed models, as well as architectural plans and animated renderings; these are accompanied by what might be described as promotional posters, catalogues and screening of a film, “Unknown Game With Ultimate things” a video filmed in the stadium showing the early stages of construction of Judgement.

This chosen language enables the ideas to shift between realms and fields, putting into question the parameters of the work itself. The manner of sincerity in which it is presented clashes with the idea it proposes; an idea, which sways between futility, humour, punishment and depth of heart; a joke, a critical observation or sincere solution.

The gallery will have a small coffee table and some chairs, the installation will offer a place for the audience to sit and rest, have a drink and talk while immersing themselves in the work. From the sublunary to the phantasmal, salvation or hoax; this is our monument and our moment, this is Judgement and all of its derivatives."
